Can Photoshop work miracles?

Postby glojo » Sun Jul 08, 2012 10:05 pm

I took some pictures of a kestrel today, sod's law dictates that those with a decent exposure were not as sharp as though with a rubbish exposure.

Is this image beyond redemption? I have a number like this and have played with a few but I just cannot play with them enough to convert them into 'keepers' Are they only good enough for the bin?

In a nutshell .......... no, PS can't work miracles. You can brighten the photo up and sharpen it to an extent, but those blurred wings will be forever blurred I'm afraid

Hi,
I think the blurred wings are the blurred wings.. They were moving.. We are talking about a kestrel that was hovering.

If you look at that 'black' beak... that to me indicates the image itself is not blurred but I am NOT clever enough to get the most out of Photoshop and would love to see what is possible.

I have had my 'Amateur Half Hour' but I know others will knock this in to touch.

I have not sharpened it in any way and those wings are quite clearly blurred :)

This is the best I can do with it.

It's well worth playing with the original, John.

The one you have posted is a small enough file to post on here, but the original should give plenty of scope for getting a good image.

I ran it through OloneoHDRengine and got a decent result but the one below is from PS using Shadows/Highlights, followed by some dodging around the head and near wing.

A few minutes work on the original, especially if it's in RAW, will give you a good "keeper"!

Good luck.

You are trying to take a picture of a bird that is quite dark against a bright sky. You need to dial in exposure compensation because the camera has exposed for the sky and not the bird.

All amazing efforts and hopefully you folks can see why I shouted for help.

May I thank every one for their excellent efforts but Pipeman seems to have set the bar and yes the original is in RAW or NEF format.

Taking shots up into the sky is certainly frustrating and I accept the constructive advice about using the exposure compensation. Strangely enough when the sun was even brighter I was expecting a totally dark image but instead got this and you can see how the sun is blasting through the tail feathers:
